An artist-run gallery.
The Bakery is a new artist-run gallery in a 19th century bakery, complete with a black cast iron oven and an original granary located on Portobello Road. I stumbled on the space looking to have my first exhibition with the brilliant Rebecca Hathaway, and I couldn’t let it go. I loved its quirk and thought other artists would too.
We’re just getting going. We have an ongoing exhibition of our permanent artists and a selection of group and solo shows by visiting artists. We also have a calendar of workshops and events in this cosy artist-run space. Our gallery is always manned by one of our artists and new pieces come and go every day. We have everything from paintings, drawings, monotype, screen prints, ceramic pots… the list goes on…. All made by local artists who contribute to curating shows and manning the gallery.
The Bakery at Portobello Road started off as a big experiment… but soon we had a waiting list of artists and I started looking for a second location. We opened our Camden Passage gallery in a homey little shop at 6 Charlton Place in June 2023 with another group of ten artists, with many of them local to North London. We’re all keen to collaborate with the group at Portobello so we can all share our artwork with an even wider audience, and help other artists to do the same.
Join us
We’re always looking for new artists to join us at the gallery in whatever way they would like - either to take over the space for a solo show or to join us on permanent exhibition, or maybe something else altogether! Pop in and say hi or send us an email and we can discuss.
Co-op membership
Our co-op membership is available to artists who would like to hang some of their work on a rolling basis and share in stewarding of the gallery. Get in touch with more information about yourself and your work and we can set up a call to discuss it further.
Solo show
We have several weeks set aside each year for small group or solo shows. Email us with some images of your recent work and we can discuss availability.
Anything else…
There are lots of other ways you can get involved. Hire the space for a private event, sell a couple paintings on commission, or something else altogether. Send us an email or stop by and we can figure it out.
